The word ‘history’ might bring sleep to most
brains but the history of watches is just the opposite. It totally means that
you can call off your mission of studying boring histories and give a read to
history of watches instead. It is as amusing and enjoyable as FRIENDS
Tv Series could be (perhaps a bit less). There are so many mind
blowing facts about the watches’ history that only few people know about them
all. We don’t want to bombard your pretty brain with huge pile of facts. Here
in this article, we will present you a list of the most interesting facts
regarding the history of watches. Let’s start, shall we?
1. We all have heard about how humans used to measure time by passage of
sand from one container to another via instruments called ‘clepsydre’. But
little do we know about when exactly the modern sexagesimal system (numeral
system with sixty as base) was first used. It was Sumer, an Egyptian who first
used this around 2000 BC. He divided the day into twelve hours and used water
clocks for night time and sundials for daytime.
2. Until the first world war, men never wore wristwatches. Initially,
women used to wear them for fashion purposes while men sticked to pocket watches.
When the war started, it was difficult for soldiers to carry pocket watches and
thus started to wear wristwatches instead. Since then, it is men who love
timepieces more than women do. History can change, no?
3. Chronograph watches are the face of modern craftsmanship combined with
artistry. The first such watch was manufactured by Louis Moinet in 1816. Let’s
all thank him for the beautiful chronograph armani watches, eh?
4. When the watch market grew huge during late 20th century, the watch
lovers complained of how watches used to get damaged when accidentally dropped.
Then came the first ever shock-resistant watch G-shock by Casio, which was
experimented by dropping off from fourth floor. It was after its ultimate
success that many brands jumped in and started making shock resistant watches.
5. Calculators used to be significant instruments back in history. The
watchmakers realized that people hated to carry big-sized calculators with them
all the time so they thought of inventing a watch with it. The first ever
calculator watch was made during 1970s and is still produced.
